Dr.
Bill Flanagan, Workshop Director:
Also called, “Flan,”Dr. Bill Flanagan recently retired as
the Minister with Single Adults at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
in Newport Beach, California. He coordinated a ministry that reached
hundreds of single people each week. Starting in 1971, Flan focused his
attention on the issues that face never-married, separated, divorced
and widowed persons of all ages.
Since 1977 he has conducted Divorce Recovery Workshops across the country,
extending a hand of hope and healing to over 13,000 persons. St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church began sponsoring this seminar in 1981. It is offered
each spring and fall.
Bill has a B.A. degree from the University of Redlands, a Masters in
Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and his Doctorate from
Fuller Theological Seminary. He is also an adjunct faculty member at
Fuller and Northern Seminary in Chicago.
His book, Developing a Divorce Recovery Ministry, was published
by David C. Cook in 1991, and is being used in hundreds of churches
in the U.S., as well as Britain and Australia. Flan spends considerable
time in personal counseling, writing, and speaking at conventions, seminars,
and singles’conferences across America.
Growing
Through Divorce
Last year approximately 25,000 people in Orange County experienced the
dissolution of their marriage. The failure rate for first marriages continues
to be about 50%, while 65% of second marriages end in divorce. Thousands
of people in our community have been deeply affected by the tragedy of
divorce.
Jim Smoke, whose book we will be using in the Workshop, has said, “You
can go through a divorce or you can grow through it.”No matter
how close or distant the divorce experience is for you, you’ll
find both the lecture topics as well as the support and understanding
of others dealing with similar issues to be tremendously helpful in making
one of life’s most difficult adjustments. These sessions are designed
for those who are dealing with the finality of a terminated marriage,
rather than the possibility of reconciliation.
